13th January 2013 – Wayne Coyne’s Birthday (Flaming Lips)

Celebration: Wayne Coyne’s Birthday (Flaming Lips)

Mission: Get 4 copies of Zaireeka on 4 stereos…or watch the YouTube video of someone else doing it.

Status: Pretty much failed

Notes: The Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne was born in Pennsylvania on this day in 1961. Zaireeka is an experimental project by the Flaming Lips in which the album was released on four different CDs which could be played separately but could also be played simultaneously on multiple CD players, if you synched them while pressing the start button. I don’t have the album. I had a bit of a search on YouTube for someone else doing this, but it all sounded a bit too jazz and a bit too rubbish to persevere, so I didn’t. If you thought that I’d successfully complete all these Kate-given missions for the year, then just wait until Wednesday.

In other news: Thank you to the person out there on the internet who found my blog from the search engine terms “is marilyn manson the kid from the wonder years”. No he wasn’t!

On May 16, 1998 in London. Coyne conducted an orchestra of 40 boom boxes played by rock luminaries such as Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Tim Gane (Stereolab), Martin Carr (Boo Radleys ), Miki Berenyi (Lush). Each boom box plays a song composed by the Flaming Lips and Coyne instructs the players on when and how to play it. Now THAT would have been a gig to remember!
